The Business of Cyber Security

Corporate Venture Capital (CVC)

Corporate venture arms are strategic investors that double as acquisition funnels: a CVC portfolio is a short-list of the parent's potential acquisitions and a signal of where strategics are placing bets.

The deep dive (Corporate Venture Capital & In-Q-Tel) covers what a cyber CVC does (invest small, observe, then buy), why financial return is the wrong lens, the named CVC landscape by archetype, the In-Q-Tel not-for-profit work-program model as a government-demand signal, and how to read a CVC cap-table line as an M&A leading indicator.

Cisco Investments Cisco Network + security; feeds acquisition pipeline (Splunk, Isovalent)
Dell Technologies Capital Dell Infra + security; early in many cyber names
Intel Capital Intel Hardware-rooted security
Samsung Next / Samsung Catalyst Samsung Device + IoT security
Qualcomm Ventures Qualcomm Edge/IoT security

Relevance to M&A

  1. Buyer short-lists. A strategic's CVC portfolio reveals capability gaps it wants to fill. A sell-side advisor maps a target against the CVCs that have already invested in adjacent companies.
  2. Validation signal. CVC participation in a round signals strategic interest — useful when positioning a company for exit.
  3. Acquisition funnel. Many corporate acquisitions are preceded by a CVC stake (option value). Track conversions from investment → acquisition. A recent instance of the funnel forming: in August 2026 the CrowdStrike Falcon Fund took an undisclosed strategic stake in Above Security, a Tel Aviv-based AI-native managed insider-threat platform that runs a fleet of autonomous AI investigators — a capability adjacent to the parent's platform and a marker of where the endpoint incumbent is placing early bets (FinSMEs, Aug 2026).
