The Business of Cyber Security

Physical Security & IoT

Physical security — video surveillance, access control, alarms, and the integrator channel that installs them — was historically a hardware trade with no connection to information security. Networked cameras, cloud video, mobile credentials and sensor fusion changed that: every modern physical-security deployment is now a fleet of internet-connected computers holding sensitive data, which makes it simultaneously a convergence market (physical and cyber security operations merging) and an attack surface (the devices themselves as intrusion paths — the Volt Typhoon edge-device tradecraft of 15c applies directly).

The market and its players

Motorola Solutions (NYSE: MSI) is the category's serial consolidator — a public-safety and enterprise-security platform assembled through years of acquisitions across video (Avigilon, Pelco), access control (Openpath), and communications, with 2025's reported ~$4.4B Silvus Technologies acquisition extending into mesh networking. Verkada$5.8B valuation (December 2025) — leads the cloud-native challenger cohort: cameras, access control, sensors and alarms as one SaaS platform, selling the integrated thesis against the legacy point-product stack (IntelliSee 2026 M&A analysis). Genetec (private, Montreal) and Milestone (Canon) anchor video-management software; Axis (Canon) and Hanwha dominate cameras; HID (Assa Abloy), Allegion, Honeywell, Johnson Controls and Securitas hold access control and services; Axon (NYSE: AXON) owns public-safety hardware-plus-SaaS; Rhombus, Eagle Eye and a computer-vision startup wave (ambient.ai-style analytics) fill the AI tier. Chinese vendors (Hikvision, Dahua) remain scale players globally while excluded from Western government estates on security grounds — a regulatory moat benefiting the rest (16).

Player Position Cyber relevance
Motorola Solutions Serial consolidator (Silvus ~$4.4B, 2025) Buying software margin; public-safety data platform
Verkada $5.8B (Dec 2025) Cloud-native integrated platform; IT-buyer motion
Genetec / Milestone VMS incumbents The software layer where cyber posture is set
Assa Abloy / Allegion / Honeywell Access & building incumbents Strategic acquirers of connected-security software
Axon Public-safety platform The hardware+SaaS re-rating template

The convergence mechanics

The buyer is converging. Cloud-managed physical security is bought increasingly by IT — Verkada's go-to-market is an IT sales motion, not an integrator relationship — which drags procurement, security review and budget into the CISO's orbit. The threat converged first: compromised cameras and badge systems are established footholds (Mirai's IoT botnets; state actors in building networks), making device hardening, network segmentation and OT-style monitoring (03h) a purchase requirement, and creating the IoT-security vendor bridge (Armis, Claroty, Nozomi — squarely cyber companies whose asset inventory covers this estate). The economics are converging too: hardware vendors chase software margins through SaaS attach (Axon is the template — 42g-adjacent in public safety), which makes software-rich targets attractive to a strategic set — MSI, Assa Abloy, Honeywell, JCI — that most cyber advisors never canvass.
